Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Director and Attorney Supervisor of the Workplace Conduct Unit (WCU), the WCU Investigator is responsible for intake and investigations of complaints from persons covered by the Legislature's Policy on Appropriate Workplace Conduct related to harassment, discrimination, and retaliation. The WCU Investigator's primary role is assessing complaints to determine if they fall within the jurisdiction of the WCU and investigating complaints determined to fall within the WCU's jurisdiction. Incumbents are experienced attorneys with the expertise necessary to capably perform complex and sensitive work with broad discretion and minimal supervision.

Working Conditions

This is a hybrid position that requires in-person work three days per week in Sacramento.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Experience in the practice of employment law including conducting workplace investigations.
  • Knowledge of Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and Civil Rights Department complaint and investigation processes.
  • Knowledge of and experience with various investigatory techniques, particularly those commonly used in workplace investigations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including experience writing detailed and complex reports, interviewing individuals to determine specific sets of facts, presenting ideas and recommendations to a panel or board, and interacting with a wide range of people in a variety of professional capacities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with management and staff of a large organization.
  • Understanding of legislative bodies and their personnel management issues.
  • Ability to develop and apply creative and innovative solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and act with discretion and tact in the performance of work responsibilities.
